AIC CAMPERS & STAFF

1957

Three Islanders were produced during the summer of 1957, but only numbers two and three survive. Their covers (which you can view by clicking the thumbnails, above, are badly faded and barely scannable.

These issues, edited by Cathy Simon, are rich with writings of all sorts -- narrative sof trips and camp events, poems, songs, cross word puzzles, riddles, and jokes. The ballad, "The Epic of Nicatuous," epitomizes the energetic and amusing wordsmithing and the considerable intellectual sophistication of these issues (see below).

One of the things that struck me, when I first encountered AIC folk in 1963, was their almost private language based on word games, puns, and arcane literary and historical references. I'd never encountered anything quite like it. If the Islanders are to be relied on as evidence, it would seem that Steve Hinrichs and the cohort of campers who came in with him brought a very new and exciting sensibility to the camp.

The third number of the 1957 Islander includes an address list and a map of the camp, which are reproduced below (click thumbs to enlarge)
